Plumbing, Construction, and Fire Protection
The Plumbing, Construction, and Fire Protection team is a part of the Building Maintenance Plumbing, Steam, and Night Operations shop.
When you think of a plumbing, construction and fire protection team, you might think that they only deal with fire sprinklers and similar equipment. But this group of eight skilled individuals is responsible for all of the plumbing connections related to fire protection and more within buildings, ensuring that the infrastructure is in top shape.
While their work may not be as visible as other maintenance tasks, the team's work is essential. They maintain and manage a wide range of specialty systems:
- eyewashes
- sprinkler systems
- oxygen, helium, vacuum and air system
- industrial hot and cold water
- deionized water
- water shutdowns for DCM
- natural gas
- compressed air
- vacuum pumps
- industrial and domestic water
- storm water and sewer and storm lift pumps
One of the team's primary goals is to ensure that the mechanical rooms are operating smoothly. Water heaters and other equipment in these rooms provide essential services such as water for research, and more. The team often works through the night to ensure that these systems are up and running by the time researchers arrive the next day. They also work closely with staff to minimize disruptions during shutdowns.
One unique aspect of the team's work is their management of secondary backflow protection for buildings. Utilities provides primary water for buildings, but the Plumbing, Construction and Fire Protection team maintains all water systems within the building. They also conduct water testing across campus.
The team's recent projects include installing a temporary pipe system at B and C Barn to reroute the underground steam, and replacing aging pipes in Wickson Hall's waste water system. During the COVID-19 pandemic, they blanketed all drinking fountains and installed signage, ensuring that the systems were flushed before everyone returned to the buildings.
A Highly Qualified Team with Diverse Skillsets
What sets this team apart is their combined knowledge and experience.
